Sant'Anastasia al Palatino

where: Piazza di Sant'Anastasia
getting there: bus 75 from Termini then a short walk from the Circus Maximus stop
open: 7:00 to midnight daily (some websites suggest that the church is open 24 hours)

The origins of Sant'Anastasia al Palatino date back to the 4th century and legend has it that the church was built for Emperor Constantine half-sister, Anastasia.
The church has been rebuilt many times, one of the last restorations was by Barberini Pope Urban VIII in 1636.
The lovely Baroque blue and gold ceiling was created by Michelangelo Cerruti in 1722 and shows the Martyrdom of Anastasia.
The main altarpiece is a Nativity by Lazzaro Baldi, below the altarpiece is a sculpture of Saint Anastasia which was carved by Ercole Ferrata.
In the third altar on the right is an altarpiece by Francesco Trevisani and in the third altar on the left the church website credits a painting to by Domenichino.
